    Local Install difficulty

I’m trying to install WordPress on a local server on my PC to learn it before doing so on a remote server. I’ve got Apache, MySQL and PHP installed and running, locally.

I set up my WordPress database and created a user.

I created wp-config.php, leaving localhost as my HOST.

From a command prompt, I successfully logged into MySQL as that user.

With my browser, I successfully connected to MySQL using phpMyAdmin, at http://localhost/

But then…I try to run the install script and I get:
“Error establishing a database connection / This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost.

…and I also get a Windows dialog box saying that the program is trying to connect to the Internet at “static.wordpress.org

I tried the “test.php script suggested in another thread….I only got an “Internal Server Error message…no useful info.

My only idea so far is if there’s a file directing install.php to the wrong location?

THe program is trying to connect to static.wordpress.org in order to load a Firefox logo. As for your problems, this may help: http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/xampp/

Yahh... The "xampp" tutorial suggests a wp-config.php with the user as 'root' and no password. I modified and the wp-install script starts. Thanks macmanx!
