  • After a long struggle I downloaded wordpress using MAMP but now whenever MAMP isn’t up and running I cannot access my wordpress blog to edit, MAMP also says the demo will be running out, how do I keep my site up and running? I think I am just confused as to how wordpress.org is even run through MAMP, feel like there has to be an easier way. Thanks in advance!!

If you have WordPress installed in MAMP on your local computer then you will only be able to access your local WordPress website when MAMP is running. MAMP is the Apache webserver, database server and PHP running locally on your computer – turn that off and your WordPress website can no longer run.

If you are brand new to local development it’s important to understand that running a WordPress website in MAMP on your local computer does not make that WordPress website publically available to anyone else on the internet – it can only be accessed on your local network.

MAMP and other tools like Local by Flywheel and Desktop Server allows us to do local development of our websites without having to be connected to the internet. Once the website is ready to launch we then have to export it the website files and database and import them into a production web hosting environment on the internet where it is publically accessible to everyone.

So if you’re wanting to use MAMP for local development that only you can see, that’s great. If you’re wanting to build a website in MAMP that others can visit then you may have misunderstood what MAMP is used for and will need to find traditional website hosting for your self-hosted WordPress site or alternatively use a WordPress.com site where the technical installation side is all taken care of for you.

This is so helpful. Thank you. I’m a newbie to it, so it is all very confusing! I have created a wordpress.com website but now I am looking to go to wordpress.org for different reasons. To create or transfer this I would now need to move to something like a blue host to have a home for my website? I found a lot of difficulty downloading wordpress.org and that’s why I had turned to MAMP.

Hello @walidb! If I understand you correctly, it sounds like you are trying to allow only computers in your company to access your WordPress site (whether or not they have internet access). If only computers with internet access can load the site well, it is possible that the site was designed with some embedded links to other sites.

For example, your theme’s fonts might use Google fonts, which require it to access another site such as fonts.gstatic.com to display your site’s fonts correctly. Or your site could be using a plugin that accesses resources on another site.

One place that might help you figure out how your site is loading on a computer without internet access versus one with internet access is the web browser’s “developer tools.” Here are links that explain how to access these tools in Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox:
    https://developers.google.com/web/tools/chrome-devtools/console/get-started
    https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn/Common_questions/What_are_browser_developer_tools

I hope this helps you identify the issue and change your site so it loads better!

thanks for the reply i am trying to get which files i need to enable in firewall but i have other problem It appears that your browser does not support our web PDF viewer check with IT Dept. You can download the PDF to view the document. how we can solve this problem any idea
