• Hi,

I’m looking for some plugin which will allow me to update my blog (I am using it for live updates for certain events) as you would expect meta-refresh is not good for my server especially with a few hundred people using it at once.

So my question is, is their plugin that will allow me to update my blog without using meta-refresh?

I was thinking along the lines of using AJAX?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Just saying “use AJAX” doesn’t make it magically good for your server. Meta refresh makes the webpage reload every so often. All AJAX is going to do is to make it hit the server without reloading. There’s still server load, because there’s still a server request happening.

Sorry I should refresh, we will have access to a high powered dedicated server so refreshing won’t be a problem, the real use of AJAX (or some other sort of web technology) would be to increase the end users usability, so again I ask you is their a solution?

Meta refresh is sometimes disabled and a lot more annoying for the user, reloading the whole page not just adding a post to the blog, as it is posted, real time.

don’t sound so surprised… this isn’t such a desirable thing from a server admin’s point of view.

Continuous refreshes whether a user is even there or not is not particularly efficient. If you put them in an automated loop they can leave their browser open in the morning, go to work, come back home to find their browser taking up connections on your server all bloody day.

Even eBay, the target of refresh-maniacs worldwide doesn’t automate it’s AJAX refresh. Instead, in the last few minutes of an auction they give you a link you can press for an AJAX refresh much faster than loading the whole page, but you still have to do it manually.

What I’m saying is, don’t be surprised if there are more members of your family than there are people who actually want something like this.

And anyway, there’s not likely to be a plugin to do this because what you’re talking about is very custom work. It depends on the specific nature and code of your site, it’s not something you can just plug and play with.
