Support » Plugin: Modern Footnotes » List of footnotes

  • Hello,
is there a way to make an automatic list of all footnotes at the end of the article or with shortcode? Other footnote plugin has this functionality, but I would like to use yours.

  • I’d also be interested in this.

I’m not the developer of this plugin, but I imagine this could be implemented as an additional, self-contained, shortcode like [mfn-list] which then pulls all [mfn] shortcodes (with their content) from the content that [mfn-list] is also in. The list of footnotes is then output wherever that [mfn-list] shortcode is placed while leaving the existing inline shortcodes as-is (or potentially via a shortcode attribute a-la [mfn-list disable_inline="true"], but I could see that being something for a later version to maybe take-on after the core implementation.)

I’ve not confirmed it, but https://github.com/seankwilliams/modern-footnotes/tree/master/modern-footnotes might be the official GitHub repository where this could be proposed by the community (as a feature request issue or a complete pull request) to help aid in the implementation/adoption of this feature.

Thanks for the feedback, I agree with both of you that we should add this! I created a GitHub issue at https://github.com/seankwilliams/modern-footnotes/issues/11 for it and will post an update here once the feature is implemented.

    Perfect! Thanks 🙂

    Hi Sean,

We really like the plugin, and we’d also love to see this feature.

    Thank you!

    Thanks @charliecat!

    Hi!
A question: can I suggest that you look at another plugin for ideas or is it unethical/wrong?
I used one that was quite good at generating a list of notes at the end of the post.

    cheers!

@arutha176 Sure! If you’ve got a good example, it would be great to consider that while determining how a list of footnotes should work. In general most plugins are open source and released under free licenses for the benefit of the WordPress community, so I’m comfortable looking to those for inspiration.

The one I used before was Easy Footnotes (https://wordpress.org/plugins/easy-footnotes/)
I left it because it wouldn’t work in mobile and was not being updated, but it is a nice plugin and does a good job of outputting “the full footnote text to the bottom of your post in an ordered list with a corresponding number”.

I would like to say that I like the idea of a list on the end of the article (I’m doing it manually just now, without links), but not at the cost of losing lightness or simplicity, that are two great things about your plugin!

By the way, I noticed that I hadn’t written a review and just corrected this!

@arutha176 thank you for the review, and thank you for the example!
