I have a number of broken links but don’t know in what order to fix them. I have a general page that links to three more specific “category” pages. These pages then have titles of various articles, which are links. Each article then has a link back to the general page and/or the category page. The broken links were brought about because I created the ‘category’ page over time, and when I added articles to it, it apparently became a new page with a new url and links in the articles and on the general page no longer worked, especially for one particular category page.

So, how do I fix this? Won’t fixing the article then make the link from the category page wrong? And then if I fix those on the category page, will that mess up the links in the articles? I no longer remember how I did this all originally…and I’m afraid to start experimenting and create a monster project. Now, about half of the 60 articles are ok, but the general page doesn’t link to one category page so does need fixing.

I don’t suppose you have a link to the site to get a better understanding?

Here’s the first page, which links to next pages with articles. The Miscellaneous Personal Attunements link in the last paragraph doesn’t work, but the page on the Menu at the top does.

    Thanks

    Personal Attunements
is a page and part of the menu?

the item at the end Miscellaneous Personal Attunements
has this been added manually in the page Personal Attunements?

if so, the link http://journeysintolight.org/miscellaneous-personal-attunements/ is incorrect
    it should be http://journeysintolight.org/personal-attunements/miscellaneous/
    as it sits under

if I’ve misunderstod, can you expand a little more?

OK..I see what you are saying. The link as it is currently set really doesn’t go anywhere. Don’t know where I got it from, but that’s irrelevant.

Parent page leads to child page leads to ‘article’ page. Does altering the content on any of those pages change their url? In other words, the url should always go to that page, no matter how I alter the page.

Sorry to be so dim, but you can understand my reluctance to start messing with things, until I understand how it really works. I obviously didn’t understand in the first place, or it wouldn’t be this big of a mess!

changing content will not change the URL (slug)

changing the title would / could but depends on how you’ve set up your permalinks
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks

usually, the post / page title will create the last part of any URL, if there is a parent the parent is part of the path.

if you change the parent, it should’nt make any difference to the children as WordPress should automatically recognize the change

the only links that you need to be wary of are the ones you may have added manually.

    this article may help:

the middle bit seems the best explanation

P.S. have a look at the Crop Circles in the sub menu under Crop Circles on your site and you’ll notice the path is http://journeysintolight.org/category/crop-circles/

Is that good or bad? It does what I want, but I’m not sure how I did it. I admit that in the latest bit of “link tracking” I wondered how I’d gotten away with two pages with the same name. I didn’t really, did I?

I’ve never figured out how to make a link to a category. Is it that simple?

Thanks for your help. And guidance to tutorials.

what you have is a page or a post with the title Crop Circles http://journeysintolight.org/crop-circles/

if you had a page or post with an identical title (from which it has used its slug crop-circles) then it would automatically add -1 to the end and would continue in increments for each page or post with the exact same title, for example crop-circles-1, crop-circles-2 and so on

the other crop-circles in the URL is actually a category which is distinct and does not conflict with page or post with the same name http://journeysintolight.org/category/crop-circles/

so you don’t have two pages or posts with the same slug but one page or post and one category

The below link explains about linking to categories https://codex.wordpress.org/Linking_Posts_Pages_and_Categories
