Links disappear on deactivation

    Howdy,
    I have a client site that was using AME. At some point it got deactivated (not sure when or by whom), but when deactivated, a couple of links disappear from the left hand menu. There’s nothing special about the links that disappear — this site uses several custom post types, all set to display in the menu/admin UI, and just one of them (called “Staff”) disappears when AME is inactive. In addition, the link to the Custom Post Type Maker plugin disappears. I can navigate to either one using the URL directly, they just aren’t in the menu.

    To complicate matters, that’s true for the client’s login. When I log in as myself, I do see the Staff link, but CPTM is still missing.

    Any light you could shed on why this might happen would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    Were any of the disappearing links created with AME? If so, it would be normal for them to disappear when the plugin is deactivated. WordPress doesn’t store the admin menu in the database or anything like that, so if you want to add new links to the menu, you need an active plugin (or theme) to do it.

    On the other hand, if some users can still see the links but some can’t, that could mean that AME was used to change menu item permissions/visibility. These changes are typically not permanent, so the admin menu would revert back to its default state when the plugin is inactive. To permanently change menu access permissions, you would need to change role capabilities. You can do that with any role editing plugin.
