Support » Plugins and Hacks » podPress » Link to existing podcast using podPress

  • Good evening,

I am in the process of converting a joomla website to WordPress. I was using a component called “SermonSpeaker” that would update our itunes PodCast. Is it possible to use podPress to link to an existing itunes PodCast? I have the location of the old itunes PodCast url, but nothing exists at that location. Will I have to re-create a new podcast?

If you still have the URL/domain of the old podcast feed and also the feed still exists then the most elegant thing to do would be to set the <itunes:new-feed-url> tag (see http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#newfeed) with the new URL of the podcast feed. iTunes updates its data once every 24 hours and would recognize the new URL automatically this way. It would use the new URL afterwards.

If the feed does not exist any-more then it becomes more difficult.
You could create a new valid XML file under the address of the old feed. This feed should at least contain one episode and the <itunes:new-feed-url> tag.
The other way is to contact Apple and remove the old feed so that you can submit the new address http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#removing

Thanks for your reply. I still have the URL/domain of the old podcast…but the files are no longer on the server. So I guess the feed no longer exisits. The component that I was using, did not have an XML file for the rss feed. It stored it in another file that appeared to read the setting information from a database.

Am I not able to put the AppleID of the current podcast in the itunes settings for podPress?

You can this. But this is only for creating the iTunes URL in one of the widgets of podPress. It will not help you to submit the new URL to the iTunes server.

That makes it more complicated. One way to solve this problem is to contact Apple in order to tell them about the deprecated URL.
But you may try to create redirect which tells all requesters of the old URL that the feed has been moved permanently (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_301). If the server software is Apache then you may create a .htaccess file with the necessary commands. On other servers exists a similar possibility.
