I’ve converted a site from a standard HTML/CSS site to WordPress. I have a directory that contains a lot of Word documents that I would prefer were not uploaded into the media files just for the sake of keeping everything in folders.

When I link to the doc files the links open a page not found page instead of opening the doc files. If I place a doc file in my WordPress Media the file opens as do links to doc files outside the site.

The link for the external site is identical with the exception of the domain name so I’m not completely sure why the link to the external document works but the link to the same document placed in a folder in the root of the site does not.

My guess is that it has something do do with how WordPress handles files but I have no idea what the problem is or how to correct it.

  • Could you indicate what the site? and where are the files?

I just figured it out. The folder with the files was originally a password protected folder on the server and I still had the .htaccess file in the folder which was preventing the download of the files. Removing the .htaccess file fixed the problem.
