    if the 'pro' version is bought does this stay or is it removed??

    ...sigh. in your plugin the P in WP isn't capitalized... these forums automatically capitalize it.. lol. interesting.

    see point 10. of the detailed plugin guidelines http://wordpress.org/plugins/about/guidelines/

    The plugin must not embed external links on the public site (like a "powered by" link) without explicitly asking the user's permission. Any such options in the plugin must default to NOT show the link.

    If the free plugin hosted on WordPress.org contravenes this, you can report it to the plugins team by email - plugins [at] WordPress.org

    The attribution link is optional and defaults to off on both the free and paid versions - just uncheck the option in your settings

    Chuck, did you try the plugin before posting your original question? Jayce53 is correct - The backlink is indeed deactivated by default.
