As of version 3.1 certain screen options are disabled by default. Here’s how to get them back.

Thanks but I checked the link and it refers to editing posts and showing certain things (I can’t even find the items on the edit post page that they refer to either). Still not sure…………..

Most of the time if anything is wrong within the editor it is a plugin or theme problem. Follow nomal debug procedures. Disable all plugins and switch to the twentyten theme. Are the link icons there? Restore all one-at-a-time until it breaks.

Can you describe more precisely what you mean by “link subpanel”? Is it something on the public side or admin side? What does it normally show, exactly? Maybe I misunderstood.

It is in the admin (the left menu) where it shows all of your tools, posts, media, pages, etc.

Ah, I see. I would try a manual reinstall of WordPress if that’s the case, unless someone else has other suggestions.
