[resolved] Link format (plugin vs. Amazon-generated) (5 posts)

    This seems like a great plugin. I recently joined the Amazon Associates program and had a ton of existing Amazon links already on my site. This plugin seemed like a much better solution than trying to go back through all those old links to add my ID manually (I assume "affiliate" and "associate" are interchangeable in this context?).

    Anyway, I noticed that the link format being generated by the plugin doesn't necessarily match the format created by Amazon's site when I generate a link from my Associates home page. For example, the plugin will create:

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1612182364/{my associate id}

    But Amazon says it should be:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1612182364/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1612182364&linkCode=as2&tag={my associate id}

    Will the format being generated by the plugin still be recognized correctly? I'm assuming so but since I'm new to the affiliate/associate thing I wanted to make sure.

    "http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1612182364/{my associate id}"

    That's the format I've always used on my sites and it has always worked fine.

    I know what you mean because I've also wondered before about those much longer URL's. But all I can tell you is using the form exactly as you are using has always worked for me and I've had plenty of clicks and sold lots of products using that form of link.

    It seems like Amazon is pretty robust and can translate a variety of forms of those links properly.

    windracer - the long ugly URLs are full of unneccessary crap which are used to identify campaigns and stuff. Of no use to you or your visititors and makes no difference to whether the click is tracked or not. The script strips it back to the minimum for neater, shorter URLs that track.
