Support » Fixing WordPress » Limited functionality & response from dashboard functions / tools in wordpress

  • I have a web page running from over 6 months but recently the dash board / administration panel does not offer full control or response to simple requests, such as removing a post or editing the web page.

While I can add a new post, I cannot add link to the post, remove an old post, or tweak elements of the web site that were standard actions previously.

All the tools are visible, but when I click on the tools such as:
    – Posts>status>edit (the page does not give the option of changing a post from published to draft)
    – dashboard>help (no response)
    – while editing a post, I can only view the text as “text” and not “visual”. Although the visual tool is available to be clicked on.
    – appearance>customise (no options on new loaded page to allow customisation)

I have deactivated all the plug-ins, but with no change in the dashboards performance.

I am using a MAC, Safari but I also tried using the dashboard on Windows, Internet Explorer, again with the same limited control as described.

Please give any assistance. It is much appreciated!!

    Thank you,

    A frustrated user.

  • Have you tried:

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

Thanks. Where do I find the default theme?

It is installed by default in wp-content/themes in all WordPress sites. If you have previously deleted it (which you should never do), then re-upload a fresh, unpacked, copy of the theme’s folder to wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    Thanks for your previous comments.

I am now resigned to undertaking your 3rd item of advice:

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

Is there a step by step guide or video of how to do this available, for a novice? I have not tried this before and do not want to create even bigger problems for myself…

    HI Esmi,

Firstly thank you for you advice.

    I have undertaken all 3 actions – but the dashboard is still acting the same way;

While I can add a new post, I cannot add links to the post, remove an old post, or tweak elements of the web site that were standard actions previously.

I have now deleted all plug-ins, except a linkedIn one.

    Anyone, any other suggestions???
