Same problem for Italian (Mi piace). I had to give up to the left side floating buttons for the same reason. I tried to fix it with CSS, but nothing change.
So, I opted for the other buttons below the post and is fine for me anyway, but I think this is a widespread problem.
I see everywhere FB vertical left Like button broken on all sites in English language, when “Like” is automatically translated by the browser into the language of those who visit.
I don’t know if it’s the same plugin, but I think that English language people doesn’t realize it because they don’t see it broken, but maybe all strangers visitors see the Like button broken.
It would be interesting have an opinion of the plugin author. It could be a FB Like button own problem, maybe not of the plugin.

Thanks Tiz, I did wonder if anyone, or any other language had the same issue, It would be great to get feedback that this was a known issue and was being looked at.

I think the English speaking world need to wake up to other languages!

    From the Developers Page

How do I display the Like button in different languages?

If you are using the XFBML version include the language code when you instantiate the library. Replace ‘en_US’ in this line with the correct locale code:

If you are using the Iframe version include a locale parameter with the proper country code in the src URL. Example:

You may need to adjust the width of the Like button to accommodate different languages.
