Support » Fixing WordPress » "Leave a Comment" becomes "# Comments"?

  • I know this is going to sound a bit odd, but it confused two friends so now I am concerned about others running into the same issue.

Keep in mind these are all just test posts right now for this goofy little site.

    http://www.puppiesbabieskittens.com

    Here’s the issue:

Prior to users commenting on a photo there is a link that says “Leave a Comment”. However, once there are comments on the post that link changes to “# Comments” (# being the the numbers of comments).

I think most of us know that you simply click on that link and at the bottom of the comments the user will find the “Leave a Reply” section where they can comment. Apparently this is not obvious to everyone and several friends were confused by this.

Is there a way I can easily have the “Leave a Comment” link showing at all times in addition to the number of comments being shown? I’m not well-versed in PHP so this may be more than just some basic editing.

  • You will need to edit comments.php in your theme directory and replace the code that retrieves the number of comments with a hard coded ‘Leave a comment’ string.

I personally prefer it to show how many comments there are. That way your visitors will know where the conversation is taking place on your blog.

look for function contango_post_comments() { in /wp-content/themes/contango/lib/functions/utility.php and change the wording there (you might need to use FTP to access that file http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_Files )
