Okay.. I’m trying to make a new theme for my site, and before I begin hacking source files, I need to ask a few questions.. How can I rid myself of the h2 elements in lists, as well as getting the category counts inside the anchor tag without having to modify core template functions?

Reason I’m asking is because I don’t want to have to go through the hassle of hacking the source each and every time I update WordPress on my site.

So, let me go into detail… I’m setting up a CSS dropdown system on my site, and I Would like to rid myself of the h2 elements, as well as change classes, and change this and that in the list functions… Right now, Links, and Blogrolls currently have the h2 element on them, and I’d like to change it to an anchor tag, basically creating a link like this that just doesn’t go anywhere, but can be used as my dropdown main anchor that the dropdown pops down out of.

Also, under the categories section, I want to show the # of posts in a particular category, but have that number of posts inside the anchor tag.. Is this possible as well?

Thank you for your time. 😉

  • Look at http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/wp_list_cats

You’ll see that tag takes on many different parameters. And you could build your call to it any way you want. You could just call the function in a <ul>, skipping the header entirely. There’s quite a bit of flexibility without having to actually touch the core files.

Hmm, but there’s no flag to cause that function to draw the post counts in the categories inside the link tags like I asked. :/

Okay, I’ve figured this out and basically wrote some things in my template files that deals with most of what I need. Thanks. 😉
