First of all, I’m a VERY new WordPress user – one week – but not new to website management, as I’ve been using a lower-end page builder for a while.

I started build a few pages a few days ago. I could work a while, leave WP, then log back in to do ore work. I was advancing to the point of adding widgets and using plugins.

For some reason last night, the dashboard menu became ‘jumpy’ when I hovered over it with the cursor. It started taking a long time for things to refresh, so I got out of WP and Explorer both. When I tried going back in, after filling in the Login info, the IE display turned all white and stayed that way until I closed that IE window.

When I go directly to the website, outside of the WP editing environment, the website is a mess. I’m using the Twenty Eleven theme but you wouldn’t recognize it. Everything is left justified instead of centered and some of the graphic elements are missing.

QUESTION (finally): Would a corrupt them cause login problems? Should I just reinstall the theme .zip? It won’t be a major disaster at this point if I lose all of the work – it’s been a few days and most of that has been learning. I have minimal content so far.

    Thanks, Scott

    The website is

  • Looks like you put a bunch of code (Google maps?) above the DOCTYPE in the header.php file (or a plugin did that)? You can never put code above the DOCTYPE – IE, in particular, freaks out if you do :). If you are making changes to theme files, you really need to be using a Child Theme so that your changes are not overwritten when the theme is updated.

I’d also suggest using Firefox or Chrome for development work – they have lots of really cool and helpful features that can make your job much easier. You’ll still want to test in IE, but avoid it for actual web work.

Thank You WPyogi, I can see what you are talking about, but I can’t edit the file, simply by viewing source. I need to be logged in, but can’t do that because of the white screen. I tried to launch it using wp-login.php. I got the username/password form, but it only led me to the same white screen.

BTW, the Google plugin did this. I’m not advanced enough to do coding changes… at least additions. The host environment that I’m has a File Manager, but I can’t find the header.php in any of the directories.

    So close, yet so far.

Have you tried temporarily renaming wp-content/plugins folder to something else?

Yes, the above is a good troubleshooting step – this has more details:

Try deactivating the plugins first and if that still doesn’t work, do the theme.

THANK YOU ! ! ! You have both been a great deal of help. I truly appreciate the advice. I will find a different plug-in for maps and directions – any suggestions?

The site now looks like it is suppose to. To see what I’m trying upgrade from, go to

I’m trying to utilize widgets, formatting for mobile, interaction with social media and online ticket sales. I have a lot of work to do.

    Thanks again. Scott

Glad we could be of help.
