I just installed the latest version (3.0.7) and I’m now getting this error on my multi-site installation:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '[' in /home/content/20/11992320/html/wp-content/plugins/disqus-comment-system/rest-api/class-disqus-rest-api.php on line 660

I am not getting the error on my single-site WordPress installs.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

I’m checking it out now. Where did you see this error? This line only runs during syncing, and you should be able to silence it by disabling syncing until we find a fix.

It came up right after the update was installed. Can’t get to the dashboard or the site itself, nor any of the sub-sites. Not sure how to disable syncing, will probably have to manually disable the plugin using an FTP client for the time being.

I see the 3.0.8 update, I’ll give it a try.

Installed the 3.0.8 update, but WP won’t let me activate the plugin because it generates the same syntax error.

Oh, so this happens during activation? The error you’re seeing seems to be the same as in this post: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/new-version-causes-500-error-for-wp-admin-reverted-back/

I’m trying to now figure out if it has to do with WordPress multisite (which seems likely) and/or the version of PHP. Do you know what version of PHP is running on your site?

Yeah, I saw that thread. I’m running PHP 5.3.24. I’m going to try upgrading to 5.6 (that’s the highest version available for the type of account I have with GoDaddy). Might take up to 45 minutes.

Just as an FYI, one of the single site installs where the update is working is running PHP 5.4.19.

Ah good to know. I’ll try doing some additional testing to see if we can lower the minimum version to 5.4 then, but it seems 5.3 is a no-go for now. Thanks for all your help thus far!

I’m having this same exact problem, which began immediately after updating the Disqus plugin.

    My site: http://www.joshmcneill.com

I have no idea how to write PHP code, so I downloaded the problem file through FTP but I have no idea what’s wrong with the syntax. Every [ I see has a ] that goes with it.

My PHP version was 5.4 but I just changed it to 5.6 a second ago. I’m not sure how long that’s supposed to take but I’m still getting the same error.

I can also say that I use the plugin Ceceppa Multilingua to make my site multilingual. I’m not sure if that means my site is “multi-site” or not, but it seems worth mentioning.

@joshisanonymous do you know which version of PHP is running on your webserver? It’s likely a syntax issue that’s incompatible with an older version.

Just updated it to 5.6 from 5.4.

Looks like it is a PHP version issue. I upgraded my multi-site install to PHP Version 5.6.27 and now the plugin works. And my other single site install is running 5.4.45, so it looks like you need at least PHP 5.4 for the plugin to work.

Great, we’ll do some testing and will hopefully be able to lower the requirement

I confirm. It works after the update of php version to 5.6 from 5.3

The problem is still persisting for me today, despite upgrading my PHP version to 5.6 yesterday.

Are you able to verify that 5.6 is active on your site? Do you have a phpInfo page on your site, or are you able to install the phpInfo plugin?
