I have Wordfence set to update automatically on most of my sites, but it caused one of those sites to go down. The only plugins installed on that site are Jetpack, UpdraftPlus, and Wordfence, so I can’t image it was a plugin conflict. The theme it’s running is twentyseventeen.

Since I couldn’t reach the site at all, I was able to get in by changing the name of the Wordfence plugin folder via FTP, and then it came back up. Are there particular hosting configurations not supported by the latest update? Here’s the environment info for this site:

    Memory limit: 256M
    PHP version: 7.0.6
    MySQL version: 5.5.5
    Curl version: 7.29.0 / SSL: NSS/3.34 / libz: 1.2.7

Just as another update, after I was able to get back into the site, I made sure the plugin was disabled, but changed the name of the Wordfence folder back to the default. That caused the site to go down again a little while later, even though the plugin was deactivated. I had to repeat the process – change the folder name via FTP, then login, then change the folder name back – and then remove the plugin entirely.

Updraft is a complex plugin with lots of moving parts, you could be getting a conflict. Likewise, Jetpack. I stopped using both due to various issues over a long period of time. You might try at least disabling Updraft and running Wordfence. I’d imagine disabling Jetpack is tougher, but could be worth trying without that as well. Just my two cents as a long time Wordfencer. I have those two plugins running alongside Wordfence on a dozen other sites with no issue.

Same here, when I was using them… then, I did have some issues… thus worth considering some trouble shooting.

BTW, I’d doubt it’s the theme, but could be worth a quick jump over to another theme for a few minutes, along with attempt to use Wordfence again.

If Wordfence doesn’t work with a WordPress-developed theme, then that’s a pretty serious issue that they need to fix.

In a perfect world, indeed so. MTN

    Hi @lmkweb,

Sorry to hear that you are having a problem here.

It may have been due to a faulty auto-update of Wordfence.

You can delete the Wordfence plugin directory here:

    ~/wp-content/plugins/wordfence

Reinstall Wordfence from the WordPress Plugins page and let me know how it proceeds please.

    Thank you.

Likewise, Jetpack. I stopped using …. due to various issues over a long period of time.

    Sooooooo true!
