Okay, to make a very long story short, I have a blog with nearly 1000 posts, and 200 pages. I feel the time has come to expand my site capabilities, and I came across the idea of a multisite, and I LOVE the idea of it. I have found lots of information on migrating multiple wordpress sites into one multisite installation, but very little info on how to split a single website into multiple ones. I have two major questions: One, is it possible?? Two, how much work is it going to be – will I have to move individual posts and pages into where they belong one at a time, or is there an easier way to do it?

The general idea is that my website is used for several different things, and I’d like to split it up into subdomains to help organize the information, and allow a differentiation in the purpose of that part of the site by customizing the theme to it. I have already been researching hosting sites, and will definitely be moving my website even if the multisite isn’t possible… but the multisite would definitely, in my mind, be the best way to go. I am not unfamiliar with web design and web hosting, but a concrete answer of how I would accomplish what I’d like to do would be super helpful.

    Large single install wordpress.com website…

You are at wordpress.ORG support forum, NOT wordpress.COM

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://wordpress.org/support/article/wordpress-vs-wordpress-com/

WordPress.com has complete documentation and support contacts at https://support.wordpress.com/

Yes, I know where I’m at. As I said, I’m moving my wordpress.com to a wordpress.ORG installation, and it’s the .org installation I need help with, not the .com one. As far as I know, you can’t do multisite on a .com installation, so thinking I would be asking for help with a multisite there is sorta silly. That being said… can anyone answer either question?

To be fair, you didn’t actually say specifically you are migrating to .org in your OP. I get that the fact could be inferred, but that’s expecting a lot of other forum readers who might not know what’s possible over at .com 🙂

Now that that’s cleared up, how you’d break up a single blog into multiple sites depends on what criteria you use to separate the posts. You’ll want to do partial exports using one of the export plugin tools available. Export only posts matching, then posts not matching your criteria.

Possible criteria depends on the chosen tool. Typical criteria are categories, authors, date range, etc. Then import the various exported files into your new network sites.
