Kirki plugin “throws” live preview 403

I have a WordPress site with Kale Pro installed (my host is using PHP 5.6.30)

I am getting 403 Forbidden errors, and having tried the usual suspects, removing .htaccess, checking file/folder permissions etc. I am at a loss for what might be wrong. I renamed the plugins folder, then renamed and activated plugins one by one. The only plugin I cannot activate is kirki. The specific problem is triggered when I go to Appearance > Customise. I get the frame on the left with all of the standard customisation options, but in the “live preview” window I get an Error 403 Forbidden page.

I would be grateful for any pointers. Unfortunately 403 errors don’t appear to offer much in the logs but here is the specific line that I think relevant

Full disclosure the child theme is my own, but is only CSS changes and I am using the same child with kirki without any problem on a sandbox with the same site

To add to this. I installed a fresh copy of Kale Pro, the premium theme I am using, along with their child theme framework. I get a 403 as soon as I attempt to live preview and that’s without changing a line of code. I also installed a couple of child theme plug-ins to see what the result would be and each and every time it is the same, customize menu on left, 403 page from host in right frame. If I disable kirki, it works without issue, but of course I am missing all the advantages of your toolset.
Interested to know if this might be related to PHP 5.6.30, the sandbox I mentioned earlier is using 7.2.10

Update No.2
WordPress updated to version 5.0.3 this morning. As I had nothing to lose I re-enabled Kirki and everything is working.
This is very good news, on the one hand, but as a former “lightweight” developer that doesn’t fill me joy. I do like to know why and how problems occur so that I know what to look for should it occur again.

@atighe sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this thread…
I’ve checked with the Kale theme and WP v5.0, 5.0.1, 5.0.2.
It took me a while to test things but so far I’ve been unable to replicate any issues with one of the previous WP versions.
To be fair I only tested with PHP 7.2.10, I don’t currently have a testsite on PHP 5.6 but I can’t see anything wrong so far.
I agree, I also want to know what is causing an issue – even if it’s been magically resolved (I don’t believe in magic).
I’ll keep looking but so far this is a ghost issue.

Thanks for getting back to me, I am hoping you at least had a long and restful break 🙂
I’ll keep monitoring for recurrence, it is frustrating not to know, but one day…
