Does switching to another theme affects the social media counts of existing articles?

I'm working for a new theme for an existing websites with a lot of articles. I'd like to preserve all the shares and likes on those pages.

I did some research on this topic. And what I know now is that shares and likes are related to the url of a page or article. So, as long I keep the permalink/url unchanged switching theme wouldn't affect my shares and likes.

Am I right about that? Any suggustions?

Changing themes should not affect your social media shares.

    Thanks esmi for your answer!

    And just to be sure...

It is not only the theme that will be brand new, but I'll also the plugin that facilitate the Social Share buttons. Now it is the DiggDigg plugin, for the new theme it will be done via Jetpack.

Will it affect the Social Share counts - tweets, likes etc. - for my articles?
