I just completed the upgrade to WP 3.4.2. My homepage and admin pages all work fine, but all individual post pages give the following error:

    Not Found

The requested URL (name of page url) was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

This has never happened before. Any ideas?

Did you do a manual or auto-update and did you follow the great advice to switch to default unedited theme and deactivate all plugins prior?

Try resetting your permalinks or just re-save and see if it solves the issue.

@seacoast – Yep, it’s the same site – I did the update as you recommended, everything worked for a few minutes… and then as soon as I published a new post, my permalinks stopped working.

@krishna – Updating my permalinks did the trick! Would you mind explaining why this worked, so I can understand for the future?

Many thanks to both of you for your quick, helpful tips!

We are happy to note that you could solve the problem.

The reason is, while making major changes, some of the settings get misplaced and they reappear if you recognize the mistake and try to solve it. Such minor problems are common during updates.

    A) Would OP please post how this is resolved in clear terms and
    B) Would Krishna please explain last comment?

    @seacoast Web Design,

I think I have explained it fairly well. I feel that you too know that. Moreover, I have noticed such problems during upgrades of my own sites (about a dozen, including six WP sites). I hope that explains it and you can understand it.

I believe my concern is that that post seems unclear.

I’ll be happy to explain how I resolved it on my end:

    1. I went to [my site URL]/wp-admin/options-permalink.php.
    2. I checked the button labeled “Custom, specify below.”
    3. In the box labeled “Custom structure,” I entered /%postname%/
    4. I clicked the “Update Permalink Structure” button.
    5. I cleared my browser cache and re-visited the problematic pages, which now worked normally as before.
    6. I went back to the Permalink page and set the format back to the one I originally had (formatted by year and month).
    7. I cleared the cache and re-checked the pages again, and all the URLs and links now worked in their original formats.

I still have no idea why this worked; I simply followed Krishna’s advice.
