 * You do need BuddyPress installed for this plugin to work, however the latest 
   version of BuddyPress has many benefits over earlier versions: it works with 
   just about any standard WordPress theme and you can enable only those BuddyPress
   functions you want to use and leave all other functions turned off.

 * That’s a real pity 🙁
    I have a 4 year old site that I’m not about to install
   Buddypress into but has run bbpress for all that time. I was looking forward 
   to adding BadgeOS but only when I could reward users with badges in their forum
   activity. Maybe you guys will consider another bbpress addon sometime in the 
   future and ill try BadgeOS then.

 * We talked about updating this plugin to work with only bbPress in a later version.
   To get around using BuddyPress you should be able to activate BuddyPress but 
   turn off all of the BuddyPress components. This **should** allow you to use the
   plugin just for bbPress…

 * As it turns out, I installed BuddyPress anyway, to get more community spirit 
   going so this is a moot point now 🙂
