I am a new blogger.I don’t fully understand the differences between follower vs. users vs. subscribers.
What I want to know is: who is subscribing to the full blog, (vs. to one post)? Did I set up too many ways to follow? Some subscribe functions (JETPACK SUBSCRIBE) do not appear to be working.

    website is http://www.rinocracy.com

Places to FOLLOW are listed below, but what option leads to what in back office?
1.) JETPACK BLOG SUBSCRIPTION WIDGET Box is in right side bar of website: SUBSCRIBE to blog by email. (I tried adding my second and third email address (heatherlouiemac), but did NOT receive a confirmation, nor do I see that email address in the back office.)
2.) FOLLOW BUTTON at bottom right of website. That works, EXCEPT the reader gets error message when I enter an address:
ERROR: “This is somewhat embarrassing, isn’t it? It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching, or one of the links below, can help.”
3.) LEAVE A REPLY box after each post, where reader can reply and click box to receive new post notifications by email. (FOLLOW MY BLOG POST). These people are not necessarily subscribers? Just followers of one post?

SO WHEN I TRY TO SEE HOW MANY SUBSCRIBERS
    1.) USERS> 4 = I have 2 Admin (correct) and 2 subscribers.
2.) FOLLOW PLUGIN. In back office, left panel, it lists 11 SUBSCRIBERS, which includes the 4 USERS (Subscribers and Admins in #1 above), plus others.
3.) Under SETTINGS > FOLLOW MY BLOG POST: It lists USERS of each post…
4.) UNDER JETPACK > SITE STATS > SUBSCRIPTIONS > FOLLOWERS, there are 11 different followers than in #2 above.

What do I need to do to make sure:
1.) JETPACK BLOG SUBSCRIPTION WIDGET is working, both in adding new subscribers, and sending them a confirmation email.
2.) To get all subscribers in one place

I did a compatibility test…. TEST: Integer Tests

I don’t fully understand the differences between follower vs. users vs. subscribers.

    • They can use the Subscription widget in your sidebar (first option in your list).
    • Whenever someone leaves a comment on your site, they can subscribe to your blog by checking the option ” Notify me of new posts by email.”
    • A WordPress.com user can start following your site right from their WordPress.com home page, here: http://wordpress.com/#!/read/edit/
    • Registered Users are people who used this form to register to your site. When they do so, they gain access to your site’s dashboard, and will appear under Users > All Users in your dashboard. They will not receive notification emails when you publish a new post. If you do not offer any specific features to registered users, I would suggest that you disable registrations on your site, by going to Settings > General in your dashboard.
    • Comment subscribers are people who chose to subscribe to a specific post; they will receive a notification email each time someone comments on that post. You can subscribe to a specific post by checking the “Notify me of follow-up comments by email.” option when leaving a comment under a post.

Your site proposes one more Follow option (number 2 in your list), thanks to a plugin named “Follow“. SInce you already use Jetpack, I would suggest that you remove this plugin, and use another plugin instead, named “Follow Button for Jetpack“.

Thank you Jeremy, for the detailed reply. Much appreciated.

Is there a way to get registered users to recieve email updates? I do have a members registration option that I want to keep, but I also want them to become followers. My site is http://www.swcentral.org
    Thanks, Amy

I’m afraid Jetpack doesn’t offer such an option. Other plugins may allow you to send subscription emails to all registered users on your site, but I’m not familiar enough with other subscription plugins to recommend a specific plugin. A Google search returned this plugin, but someone in the General support forums might have a better recommendation:

    Support Forums

A WordPress.com user can start following your site right from their WordPress.com home page, here: http://wordpress.com/#!/read/edit/`

How? I’ve been been looking for the follow button on a self install with jetpack and I don’t see it.

I have two workdpress.com accounts. Each is linked to a self install of wordpress. I put the subscribe widget in the side bar of each site. When I go to each site all I get is a email form to subscribe by email which is exactly what I don’t want. I want a follow button so that all someone has to do is click it and my blog entries automatically start appearing in their wordpress.com reader. So where is that button?

The Follow button appears on the top of this page:
    http://i.wpne.ws/PdMT

WordPress.com users can enter your site URL there, and start following your site.

However, it seems you would like to add a Follow button to your own site, without having to go through the WordPress.com home page.

Jetpack only includes a subscription form at the moment, as explained here:
    http://jetpack.me/support/subscriptions/

You can also use this plugin to add a Follow button to the bottom of your browser window:
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/follow-button-for-jetpack/

However, your readers won’t be able to start following your site without entering their email address and submitting the subscription form.

It’s a good suggestion though, and we’ll consider it for a future Jetpack update!

It’s a good suggestion though, and we’ll consider it for a future Jetpack update!

Thank you. There are a lot of non-technical people out there that don’t bother with multiple steps. Even if it sounds straight forward to technical minded people. So I’d hate to have to tell them “if you want to subscribe to my site you have to go to your reader on wordpress.com and then you have to click on edit and then you have to copy and paste my url and then click on follow” at which point they will think “nevermind.”

Making it an easy one button push would be very beneficial.

Can I make two more suggestions while I have your attention?

    1. Include a wordpress.com style reader into the wordpress control panel for self install sites. Then those of us who own self-installs can read our subscriptions on our own websites. Nice center and big like a facebook feed. You can even put instream ads into the feed for all I care. This woud allow me to read all my wordpress.com and wordpress.org subscriptions right from my own site.

    2. You already have a central database of users going at either wordpress.com or gravatar. Allow us to find people on say wordpress.com and put them into friends groups (family, friends, co-workers, etc.) and then be able to mark our posts, pages, images, videos, products, etc. individually so that only the chosen friends groups can see them. Just like how circles work on Google+. I would love to be able to have my own websites where I can mark posts and pages for only certain friends groups to see. So long as those friends are logged into wordpress.com when they visit my dot com they can see that post or page otherwise they get a “You don’t have permission to view this page” page.

I’m so grateful I found this string, and I appreciate all of Jeremy’s comments. I’ve had many problems with people subscribing, the latest of which is a WordPress.com person only wanting to subscribe via her reader. I’m glad to have found the reason!

That doesn’t solve my other problems, but at least I have one answer. Thanks!

    http://www.kellykuhn.com

Ahhh, this clears up some of the confusion I had as well. Thanks for the tips.

I’ve been having this problem to so I’m glad I found this thread! Still annoyed that I can’t just have a follow button on my page for wordpress.com users though it makes no sense not to have it and its really going to halt the growth of my blog. I had 350 ish followers on .com which I’m waiting to be moved over at the moment and only a few email ones but now it’s going to be very difficult for new readers to follow my blog.

I hope it goes quickly for you, Tammy. Even though I’ve written instructions in my sidebar, I’ve received no new WordPress Reader subscribers. I don’t blame them, but it makes me sad.

Of course, it could just be that my blog doesn’t appeal to most readers. I have to live with that possibility.

    Great answer Jeremy!

thank you. Great answer about subscriber vs user. Going to settings>general presently.

    Awesome Jeremy
