  • Resolved muppix

I would like to show Jetpack related posts only on certain posts, and don’t care whether the include or exclude be explicit.

I understand there’s an option to turn on Related Posts for all posts under the Jetpack Traffic Settings, and that there’s a Related Posts block that can be manually inserted.

The problem is, the Related Posts block isn’t available in the editor unless the Jetpack Traffic setting is enabled, which then inserts Related Posts anyway, without needing the block. Turn off the Related Posts setting in Traffic and you no longer have the ability to insert a Related Posts block.

Am I missing something here? It appears that you can add Jetpack Related Posts to all content or no content, and that the Related Posts block is therefore pointless.

You have two options depending on how technical you want to get. 🙂

You could use this to remove the automatic Related Posts display:

Then, use the Related Posts Block to display them only where you want to:

Or, you could use to selectively disable the automatic display only on specific posts and pages.

Thanks James, that was helpful. I decided to go with the option of removing the Related Posts (RP) display via functions.php and then add it back in explicitly using a heading and RP block grouped together and wrapped in a reusable block. This gives me the option of styling it just how I want, using it where I want, and updating all instances quickly if I need to. Pretty happy with the result.

In terms of feedback on the plugin, my original observation regarding the vanilla implementation of Related Posts stands – having the availability of the RP block and the RP global setting tied to the same on/off switch doesn’t make a lot of sense. I guess the team at Jetpack knows this otherwise we wouldn’t have that excellent page of workarounds you linked to. Incidentally, I did search for a solution before posting my question, but somehow missed that page. My bad …
