Support » Plugin: Jetpack by WordPress.com » JetPack Contact Form Sending the Page Instead of the Data

  • I call it an “inside out” message. A visitor to my site tries to send me a message using a contact form added to the page with JetPack. But instead of the form data, the email I get is the text of the page on which the contact form lives.

It’s random. Doesn’t happen all the time. But I sure need to figure out how to fix this.

    Who can I call? lol.

Could you let me know what other plugins are currently active on your site? Do you happen to use a caching plugin? Most caching plugins are compatible with Jetpack’s Contact Forms, but the issue you described could be caused by some aggressive caching.

    Thanks!

When a topic gets a reply, it gets bumped to the top of the forums, which is why all the threads we’ve replied to in the past few days now appear before yours. No worries, we reply to every thread, from the oldest to the newest! 🙂

    Thank you for replying, Jeremy.

I’m quite baffled by this problem, and I’m having to explain that there’s something randomly broken to lots of visitors to my site these days. So much so, that I’m on the verge of creating a form letter to explain it.

The site/page where this is happening is: http://www.girlsrockradio.com/music-submission-guidelines/

And the current list of active plugins is listed below. All are current, and I am not using a caching plugin because I’m on a LiteSpeed server which seems to have pretty good response times without additional help.

    Akismet
    CSV Importer
    Custom Post Type UI
    Exec-PHP
    Headway Toolkit
    HiFi
    InfiniteWP – Client
    Jetpack by WordPress.com
    pTypeConverter
    RadioDJ Plugin
    Redirection
    SoreThumb+ with PageLaser
    Wordfence Security
    Wordpress File Upload Pro
    XCloner

All of these plugins have been installed and working fine for a really long time, or would seemingly have no bearing on the issue. The RadioDJ plugin is the most recent addition, but it adds functionality to certain pages via short codes and is not used on the page in question.

Thanks! None of these plugins should cause any trouble, indeed.

Could you copy your contact form shortcode as it appears in the page editor, and paste it here so I can run some tests on my end?

    Thanks!

    Hi Jeremy.

    Sure. Here you go:

[contact-form][contact-field label='Your Name' type='name' required='1'/][contact-field label='Email' type='email' required='1'/][contact-field label='Website' type='url'/][contact-field label='How did you learn of Girls Rock Radio? If %26quot;Google%26quot; please also tell us your search term. (IMPORTANT)' type='textarea' required='1'/][contact-field label='Please introduce yourself' type='textarea' required='1'/][contact-field label='How would you like to submit music to the station for airplay consideration?' type='radio' required='1' options='We will be mailing a CD.,We would like to use the Uploader.'/][contact-field label='I understand this station features the music of Women Artists and I, my band, or the band I am representing qualify as such.' type='checkbox' required='1'/][contact-field label='I/We hereby certify that I/we are the artist/band seeking airplay, OR have gained permission DIRECTLY from the artist/band to submit music for airplay consideration (i.e., not any management agent, but rather from the artist/band themselves.)' type='checkbox' required='1'/][contact-field label='I/We understand that, although we may provide links to music or videos as verification that we really are artists (not just spammers) that airplay consideration will not be given unless music is actually submitted to the station via postal delivery or the Uploader.' type='checkbox' required='1'/][/contact-form]

Thanks. I don’t notice anything wrong on my end, and can’t reproduce the issue on my test site.

It’d be helpful if we could understand when this happens on your site. Could you check the Feedback menu in your dashboard, and see if there is anything in common between all the submissions that failed? Did they maybe select the same options? Did they enter a specific character in one of the fields?

    Thanks!

Don’t understand your request. “Feedback” just takes me to a survey.

You should see a Feedback menu appearing right under the Comments module in your dashboard:
    http://i.wpne.ws/djZD

Try going there to find out more about the form submissions.

Let me know what you find!

Sorry. I don’t have than menu item.

That’s interesting. The menu is added as soon as you enable the Contact Form module in Jetpack. The module can’t work without it.

Could you go to Jetpack > Settings in your dashboard, and make sure the Contact Form module is active?

If it is, if you still don’t see the menu item, could you let me know what other plugins are currently active on your site? Do you happen to use a plugin that edits and reorganizes the menu items no your site?

    Contact Form is active:

Active plugin list is a few posts back in this discussion, and none of them edit or reorganize anything on the Dashboard (that I’m aware of.)

Deactivating and reactivating the module has no effect – Feedback dashboard item remains missing.

    Okay…

It’s the “Custom Post Type UI” plugin that has broken your dashboard entry.

Looking at another one of my WordPress websites that has the JetPack Contact Form but no Custom Post Type UI plugin installed, I noticed the Feedback item was present. Looking at the HTTP GET parameter in the URL generated by Feedback, I was able to determine you are using a custom post type. That gave me the idea to disable the CPTUI plugin on Girls Rock Radio, and -viola- the JetPack Feedback item appeared.

I have reported the situation to WebDevStudios, the author of Custom Post Type UI.

I still need to look over the JetPack Contact Form entries in the db that were received inside out vs normal to see if there’s something different between them, but we’re getting closer…

    Nice catch!

Let me know how it goes.

WebDevStudios replied that they were unable to reproduce the issue and suggested I look at “the settings for your own post types” for a possible clue.

When reactivated to see what settings they could even be talking about, the JetPack Feedback item remained in place. I have no idea what was causing your item to fail to register on the menu, or why it succeeded in the absence of Custom Post Type UI, but I think the long and short of this is that I just chased my tail in a full circle and nothing has really changed.

In looking over the Feedback entries in the db, what I can tell you that’s different about the “inside out” submissions I’ve received is that they are not there at all. In other words, JetPack emails me the submission, but does not record it in the database.
