 * We recently acquired a site from another developer. Updates had not been performed
   on the site for sometime. Everything is now current on the site.
 * I went into the site today to look into making some changes to the content. I
   noticed that the Wordcount was 0, even though there was content on the page itself.
   If you highlighted over the text edit box, the code was there, but “whited out.”
   Also, there were no options on the theme (HTML5 Reset).
 * I followed the instructions here for debugging: [https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors](https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors).
   Steps 1 and 2 did not work (tried using Chrome, Firefox and Safari). Script debugging
   was turned on without any perceptible change.

 * First of all, make sure the problem is not a compatibility issue or an error 
   in a plugin that you’re using. To achieve this, we recommend you to deactivate**
   ALL** your current plugins, and switch to a default WordPress theme like _Twentyseventeen_,
   then try to edit your content and check the words counting.
 * If the problem is solved with this measurements, then definitely the issue resides
   in a plugin installed on your website, try to discover which one, and find another
   alternative to perform what that plugin does.

 * It ended up being a permissions issue – permissions were not set for users to
   execute javascript, only read it. After we changed that, everything is working
   now.
