• I’m writing Japanese characters in the English version of WordPress 2.9.2. Character encoding is set at utf8.

    Firefox displays the pages properly, but IE shows a jumbled mix of Japanese and Chinese, with IE displaying the characters in [Japanese (Shift JIS)] encoding. When I manually change the browser encoding to Unicode, it appears fine.

    Any ideas?

  • If you switch the theme to default one included in the Japanese WordPress package, the page will probably display fine. When the page’s charset is not declared in the header, your IE is defaulting to Shift_JIS.

    Try adding this line right after <meta> before <title>.

    <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8">
