iTunes Podcast App showing excerpt instead of full post content

  • Powerpress creates an RSS feed with a “description” element and a “content” element. The description shows an excerpt of the post content and this is what iTunes uses for the show notes in the podcast app. This means that my show notes are getting cut off instead of showing the full text.

Why doesn’t powerpress show the full content of the post within the “description” element?

Or alternatively, how can I make it so the full content of the post is shown within the “description” element?

Really popular podcasts like the “Ten Minute Podcast” is having the same issue (you just have to look it up within the podcast app because the iTunes link online shows the full content).

This is the correct behavior, this is because of the iTunes specifications. The itunes:summary cannot exceed 4,000 characters and should not contain html. The custom excerpt is perfect for this usage.

IF you want complete control, go into PowerPress Settings > Basic settings. Under the section “episode entry box”, find the option “i”Tunes summary”, check the option then click “save”. You will now be able to set a custom iTunes summary other than the blog post or excerpt.

I description no longer gets you that much traction on iTunes. I find the “iTunes subtitle” is much more valuable to customize, that’s also an option to enable under “episode entry box” settings.
