I’ve been using GutenBerg since before 1.0 so I have seen it grow from a very painful “can we do this?” into the functional, if shaky success today.

Much like the moon landing, the growth of Gutenberg cannot be seen easily as the soze of the whole is emense and complex. It’s a drastic undertaking and yes it’s hard to find your bearings.

But when I look at the posts I’ve answered here for almost a decade, and I’m still having to tell people NOT to switch between GUI and HTML editors, and I see we still force people to use plugins and short codes for layout, I think that this choice, however painful, is the right one.

It’s not perfect yet, but if you asked me to give a star rating to the HTML editor or the existing GUI, I would give them a 4 as well.

It’s not worse, it’s different, and it needs improvements. But it gets us away from WP being ‘just’ a blog and into a full fledged CMS for all things. And once you learn the new editor, you might be amazed at where you can go.

    UPDATE – 18 May

I have changed this from four stars to five.

Gutenberg isn’t perfect, and it does have some quirks, but it’s also improving every release, solving problems, making things work better. I like it exactly as much as I liked the Classic Editor and, with that in mind, I am giving you a 5.

@ipstenu thanks for the review and such considered feedback. I find myself nodding so much to what you write. A long path to this point has happened, but now is the bug fixing and smoothing of flows. This iteration time is where all this amazing feedback turns into solutions and influences.
