Support » Plugin: WP 404 Auto Redirect to Similar Post » It doesn’t find similar posts, pages. this is SEO killer.

  • hola1

I have used this for few months and somehow it concerns me that I might have made a mistake.

I run a blog and quite often I change my post name and URL. Before installing this plugin, i remember if a user typed an old URL, WP would somehow take the user to the new URL (same page). But with this plugin installed, it takes to homepage.

    It is a SEO killer.

I’m sorry to hear that, but I think you’re doing a mistake. To avoid confusion, let me explain you how WordPress handle “Old Post Slugs”.

    • If a user change a post slug, WordPress will store the old slug in a post_meta called _wp_old_slug
    • This default behavior is NOT applied to hierarchical post types (ie: Pages) and Attachments
    • If a 404 is about to be displayed, WordPress will automatically check if a old slug is already saved and do the redirection in the template_direct hook with a priority of 10 (see /wp-includes/default-filters.php:352).
    • By default, WP 404 Auto Redirect to Similar Post is also hooked on template_direct, but with a priority of 999, which means it won’t change WordPress default behavior for “Old Post Slugs” (unless you changed that specific advanced option).

I would suggest you to check the plugin’s “Priority Option” to be sure you saved it to 999. Then you’ll get the befenits of Old slugs WP redirects and WP 404 Auto Redirect to Similar Post redirections.

BTW, here are some real “SEO Killer” stuff you should fix on your blog

    • Add HTTPS protocol
    • Setup page cache
    • Remove/Noindex tag pages
    • Remove useless <h1> on “screen-reader-text”
    • Add <h2> on your post links, <h3> for low levels links
    • Add Amp support
    • Remove/Redirect your 404 pages
    • etc…
