• I’ve been curious about this plugin for a while and decided to give it a try. This plugin is overkill unless you are on an enterprise class server and need Fort Knox type security for a huge e-commerce site or something with super sensitive information.

It completely broke my site on install and I had to delete everything from the database using myPHPadmin to get it working again.

It is not for the casual user with a normal, everyday wordpress site. If you use good username/password discipline and the Limit Login Attempts plugin, you’re probably secure enough in most situations.

  • This plugin seems to have a very good record of trouble-free installation, however some server configurations may require support input to overcome installation issues. The plugin authors’ have two support technicians who monitor the Wordfence support forums, and I’m sure if you posted there they would help you through to a successful installation. Regarding your final point, I have to disagree. This security plugin is one of the best firewalls for the casual or professional user. Once setup correctly it is very easy to use, highly effective, has excellent documentation and the updates are stable. While I agree 100% that limiting login attempts is essential from a security angle, as well as maintaining strong usernames and passwords, there are also a broad range of other attack vectors that you need to protect yourself from. My sincere advice is either to seek support in the Wordfence forums to successfully setup the plugin, find another respected firewall plugin that installs without any problems, or to get comfortable with adding protection at the .htaccess level (link 1 link2). From my experience being hacked is a real pain, and time-consuming to resolve. Best wishes.

Wordfence definitely IS for “the casual user with a normal, everyday WordPress site”. Hackers and defacers go after any WordPress site, regardless of how insignificant it is.

I’ve installed it on over a dozen sites and had zero trouble with any installation.
