issue with trying to install/delete plugins using ssh (11 posts)

I'm at a loss so after spending many hours trying to resolve this myself I figured I'd seek out some help. When I try to install/delete plugins I have the option of using ftp, ftps(ssl) and ssh2. When I select ssh2 I am getting the following error:

Error: There was an error connecting to the server, Please verify the settings are correct.

I have read and used information from the following pages to no avail:

    http://blog.homelinux.org/?p=83
    http://kevin.vanzonneveld.net/techblog/article/make_ssh_connections_with_php/
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php
    http://www.firesidemedia.net/dev/wordpress-install-upgrade-ssh/

Of course it would help if wordpress gave more specific error messages instead of being so vague but what can I do.

I am not open to using ftp or ftps(ssl) and need to get this working asap. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

    Need more detail.

Are you trying to delete plugins via FTP? SSH? The wp-admin screen?

    What host are you with?

neither installing or deleting plugins is working via ssh through the wp-admin screen, I have the option to select ssh2 but it always returns the error. This is being done on an in house dev server running debian.

I'm really not sure what you're trying to do.

Are you trying to install a new plugin via wp-admin/plugin-install.php or delete an already installed plugin via wp-admin/plugins.php?

    OR

Are you logged in to your server via SSH and are trying to delete a plugin folder? IE: A folder at /wp-content/plugins?

I'm trying to do both of the following:

install a new plugin via wp-admin/plugin-install.php
delete an already installed plugin via wp-admin/plugins.php

when I go to delete a plugin via wp-admin/plugins.php I am given the options ftp, ftps(ssl) and ssh2, I'm trying to use ssh2.

    Aah...gotcha.

What host are you with? Have you tried FTP?

I've had issues on a different server a while back where it wouldn't accept my FTP credentials and allow plugin installs. I eventually figured out that it was a permissions issue with my VPS.

The problem may be with your hosting environment.

This is an in house dev server, not hosted with anyone, it's running debian and the latest versions of apache, php and wordpress. We only allow connections via ssh and sftp(ssh) to the server. I am able to connect via PuTTY(ssh) and Filezilla(sftp) using the credentials and the site directory is owned by the user so i don't think it's a permissions issue but of course I could be wrong.

Thanks for taking the time to try to help me.

I spent a lot of time trying to fix this issue on that old server. Before finally moving to a new one.

I'm pretty sure my issues were related to permissions, but I wasn't able to figure out how to fix them.

Sorry I can't be of more help than that. Best of luck.
