    Hi there GB team,

I’ve updated to WordPress 5.7 and now I can’t seem to save any posts that use resuable blocks (which are heavy with GB components). If I’ve used a reusable block as a template in a new post, then hit save, I get no error and it looks like it has saved but none of the changes actually save. Also, in some cases, some of the changes have instead overwritten the reusable block template. I’ve tried creating a test post without using resuable blocks and that seems to save without any issues.

Any ideas around what might be causing this? I have tried to go into “manage resuable blocks” and resave one of the templates (which solved the last problem I had with reusable blocks) but this doesn’t seem to solve the problem.

Many thanks in advance for any thoughts.

    Hi there,

If you right-click + Inspect on the page where the issue is happening, are there any errors in the “Console” tab? If so, can you share a screenshot of them?

When you say none of the changes save, do you mean changes to the actual re-usable block?

    Thanks Tom!

Doesn’t look like there are any errors in the console tab. I can’t see where to upload the capture let me know if you still want to see it?

So two things are happening when we’re starting a new draft post, adding a resuable block and and making changes:

    1) None of the changes to the draft post are saved at all. So if we exit and reopen the draft, all the changes are gone. Also, when we hit “save” it says that the post has saved but if you try close the tab, we see the “Leave site?” changes may not be saved pop up

    2) Super weirdly, some of the changes made in the draft post are saved back to the resuable block itself. So if we go to “manage resuable blocks” and open the reusable block we used in the draft post, some of the changes are there.

I asked our hosting provider to look into it, they said there’s no conflicts between plugins so are stumped!

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

    Many thanks!

I wonder if it’s something server related. Do you have a site on another server you can test with? I haven’t personally run into this issue, and it hasn’t been consistently reported. We have seen some issues with reusable blocks and WordPress 5.7, but most of those have ended up being corrupted reusable blocks/other plugins.

I have the exact same issue.

    – Create post and add a reusable block from the templates I created.
    – Edit the block in the post.
    – Click publish and I am now prompted to save edits to reusable block template.

If I leave the prompt checked, the original template is altered … which I do not want.

If I uncheck the prompt, post will not save the edits I made and will not publish.

There use to be a step where you had to convert the reusable block template after adding it to the post before you could edit it and the original would remain unaffected. Now, if you edit the reusable block in the post, it edits the original template as well … THIS IS BAD.

Also, If I edit a reusable block in a post, it automatically edits the original template as well … it should not be doing this.

I’m pretty sure it has something to do with not converting the reusable block after adding it to the post but before you make edits.

BTW … I don’t use the GenerateBlocks plugin, although I do use GeneratePress theme and GP Premium plugin.

I have added this topic to the GeneratePress.com support forum. Since I don’t use this plugin and have the same issue, it must be related to the GP theme or GP Premium plugin.

Hmm weird, so maybe not a generate blocks issue. Thanks @hmnvtn let me know if you find any resolution. I’ve asked a developer to look at it for me as I’m just too unskilled.

I’ll try saving completely new reusable blocks and seeing if that fixes the issue!

    Hi there,

    To add to this:

You can try to salvage the reusable blocks with issues by placing them and converting them back into regular blocks after you placed them.

This way, all the efforts you’ve put into making them reusable blocks isn’t completely wasted.

I don’t believe it’s a GeneratePress issue – at least not one we’re aware of. GeneratePress actually has no input on anything in the editor (unless you’re using GP Premium 2.0.0-beta).

According to David @ GeneratePress, WP 5.7 changed the reusable block format and put it in its own wrapper. You need to redo or convert your legacy reusable blocks into the new format for them to work. It is not a plugin specific issue.

Elvin @ GeneratePress confirms and says, “Convert the reusable block back to a regular block so the effort put into making the layout isn’t a complete waste instead of remaking them from scratch.”

    Just confirmed it works …

    – Create new reusable block
    – Copy items from legacy reusable block to new format reusable block
    – Save new, delete old reusable block
    – Create new post
    – Add new format reusable block
    – Click “Convert To Regular Blocks” button
    – Edit as normal

Same functionality, just more efficient as the whole thing is in its own wrapper until you convert it to regular blocks. There were a few glitches with the old blocks anyway, so this is better. However, WP needs to publicize this change a little better as it is significant and not documented anywhere I could find it …

Yeah, that’s the way to go.

You can re-convert it back to reusable block if you want but I’d personally avoid it knowing what mess could take place with WordPress updates.

Thanks everyone, this seems to be working for me too! Much appreciated!
