Support » Fixing WordPress » Renaming Slug Updates All Links and Adds Redirect?

  • Sometimes there’s a need to do some reorganization of pages on a site where you want to make pages into sub-pages or just rename the slug (which the former also does).

Is there a plugin that automatically updates all links to the page with the new slug (obviously navigation links are updates automatically), AND adds a 301 redirect from the old slug to the new slug?

I’m not aware of any such plugins. Doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

If there are not a huge number of changes, there is software that can search the DB for specific strings and replace those found with another string. Like search and replace in a word processing document, except for DBs. This software can be dangerous in the wrong hands, it’s easy to completely corrupt your DB if you don’t know what you are doing. For example, interconnect/it offers such software.

Manually adding a few 301 redirects to .htaccess wouldn’t be a huge task for limited redirects. If there are many frequent changes, going this route could become onerous.
