wordpress as a stand alone product is sureley a good thing. But wordpress is only successfully working with themes and plugins. Themes and plugins will produce a large variety of problems if you want to update an existing wordpress installation (if u were lucky to make it work in a specific theme/plugin environment).

The general topic of upgrade and problems when upgrading exists with any solution. WordPress, when one follows the normal procedures
– back up before upgrade
– eventually test locally
