• This is a general question:

Is WordPress a good choice for developing all (or even part) of a large user-generated website that contains highly custom user input forms, Javascript animations, unconventional page layouts, and which ultimately aims to be on the level of Pinterest or another top-tier enterprise-level site, perhaps providing its own API in the future? (Content management IS a big part of the site…)

  • If you’re looking to be as big (or bigger) then pinterest, then no, I would not recommend starting with WordPress. It’s not that WordPress is bad, but it’s not the most optimal solution to that sort of problem.

When you are looking at something like that that has a whole heap of specialised functionality, you’ll find that you’ll be a lot better off developing something form teh ground up that can match the scaling that you’ll need to do for it.
