This plugin has not been updated in 11 months, but is still being used by some people at least until the end of 2015. The two plugins I attached below seem to do the same job for me, maybe better. They have both had updates in the past 2 months, which always makes me a little more comfortable.

Also, there is one plugin called Auto Post Thumbnail that takes the first image from the post and resizes it and makes it your featured thumbnail. Not sure if that would better suit you.

I am hopeful that “Auto Post Thumbnail” will be able to use the first image in a post to create a smaller version and save that as the featured image. As right now my plugin is just using the first image in the blog as the featured image and it is causing tremendous downloads on each page.
