I have seen a sharp uptick in “new user registration” emails for my blog. The registrations look legit as each one is quite unique and my site has been getting a lot of traffic lately so I’m not terribly surprised to get more interest – even though registering on my site gives those subscribers nothing extra. I also allow user registration with the default role being subscriber so I’m not worried about anyone hacking my site through this route (maybe I should be?).
So to the real question: How are these people registering to my site? I don’t provide a link for them to register so the only way I see them registering is by manually entering mydomain.com/wp-admin and then selecting “register.” It seems like a lot of random people to go through that much effort for no payout.
Does WordPress.com or some other external site provide options to register to WordPress sites? Does being a “subscriber” give these people any type of bonus over just using my RSS feed or going to my site from time to time? Just trying to make sense of this.
