• I am wanting to duplicate an existing blog and port over the entire contnents of the blog and have it exist as a sub directory. ie… Johnsblog.com and johnsblog.com/blogtwo.

Is this even possible with Multi Site? Is there a plugin?
I’ve installed Multi site and as I see it there is one database so I have no clue how to import the DB

Any help would be much appreciated thanks.

You’d just make a second blog on the multisite install on johnsblog.com for blogtwo. You can export from the existing blog and import into the new one. Should be the easiest.

With wordpress import yes but because I’m using custom post types I need to Import directly through phpadmin. I see the tables are labeled 2 but they all reside in the same db. Anyone else shed some light?

Custom Post types don’t get exported? Seriously? That’s a problem… I’d raise a ticket in Trac about that.

Sorry I should have been more clear. Exporting via the admin ONLY export your posts, pages, comments, categories, and tags; uploads and images may need to be manually transferred to the new blog.

I have tons of uploaded images and redoing it all manually is not gonna be pretty. There must be an easier option to duplicate the site in and the DB.

That isn’t as hard as you’d think, actually, the moving of images πŸ™‚ see you can KEEP all your old ones in their old locations, and just use the new locations for the new ones. Or you can search/replace your exported posts, put in the new URL, and then manually moves the files. You may need some .htaccess finery there, but it’s not insurmountable.

I realize it can be done its just not ideal. Also I’m sort of confused as to the correct area to import / export within the admin. Its not clear where to import for a specific site or the entire network.

You make the new site and import the posts there.

And ideal is … Well, ideal would have been that multisite was there from the start πŸ˜‰ but when its not, we have to make the best of what we’ve got.

The only import/ export areas are for individual sites. there is *nothing* that is network-wide.

Also note the use of the word “may” in the reference to images.

yes I noted it, I posted it. Ha.

I think the site import/export will work for me, just sucks it doesn’t include some data like menus config, the only other issue I’m having is I have three custom post types I’ve created and none of the custom taxonomies show up for either of them. Is there any know issues of incompatibilities with Custom Posts and MU?

Nope. I’ve been using them on sites in the network.

    With Custom Taxonomies?

Could having the main site reside on a subdomain cause an issue with sub domain network?

I.e franks.domain.com Two secondary sites under that johns.franks.domain.com?

I still haven’t resolved this. If someone has a working example they could post or give some advice as to why the taxonomies aren’t showing up would be much appreciated.

i made a script for this.

but i’m stuck on one little problem. the users.

i get everything to transfer, but after the transfer, no user can no longer edit the bog. they can only see it.

i still have to find where to fix this, then i should have something.
(it’s a shell script that i use on dreamhost)

    Manual way:
    http://bavatuesdays.com/importing-a-single-wp-blog-to-a-wpmu-installation/

which is for importing an existing standalone blog into a network, but can also be used the other way, or to help you figure out how to dupe blogs manually within a network.
