Is there a way to activate a theme via FTP? (3 posts)

I'm setting up a self hosted site, but the domain name is still forwarding to a wordpress.com site, which is how I want it until I have the hosted account properly set up.

While this is the case, the only way to FTP files in is using the IP address in the Host field of the FTP client instead of the domain name. That's fine, works and all. But I'm wondering two things...

    1. is there a way to activate a theme or plugin via the FTP client once it has been installed into the themes directory?
    2. while the DN is forwarded to that wp.com site, is there anyway to get into the Admin side of the new self-hosted site? To make design changes, activate plugins/themes, etc?

    Thank you so much...Jeb

    1. not unless you named (style.css) and put the theme files in the wp-content/themes/default folder. But you could use phpMyAdmin to do that but if you can't access the web-site why bother?

    2. Install WordPress on local machine (running XAMPP) then just move the theme and plugins via FTP when you're done playing...

Note, some hosts give you an IP address that you could use to access WordPRess on your host. If you do that, see Changing_The_Site_URL when you go live.
