Hello! I’ve been using SSP for over a year and a half and I just noticed that in addition to the featured image there is an episode image as well.

Until now I have been putting my 1400x1400px album art as my featured image. But now I’m wondering if that was the right thing to do.

Can I put a rectangular featured image so it displays that on the website and FB, and leave the episode image empty? Will it then take the series image for the rss feed for things like iTunes? Or do I need to also included an episode image?

I tried setting, for one episode, my album art (1400x1400px) to the episode image and a rectangular image to the featured image. When I check the rss feed, the itunes:image is set to the featured image, not the episode image.

So is the information in this post out of date? https://wordpress.org/support/topic/episode-image/

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

The Episode Image is a new feature, as of the v2.6 release. It currently only applies to the image that is displayed to the left side of the on-page HTML5 player, but we are going to be carrying that image through to the RSS feed as well here shortly.

So, like you’re alluding to, you can have a square episode-specific image that will display in the player and in your RSS feed, but a rectangular Featured Image for the post, as that’s a more common format for that image.

Hope that helps, and if there’s anything else we can do just let us know.

That’s wonderful. For a long time I have struggled with social sharing esp on FB because they really want a 120×63 shaped image, but for reasons you know, we had to put the album cover in the featured spot.

How will we know when you have made the change?

Also, will the rss image default to the series image if the episode image is empty? To me that makes the most sense. It will also be easy to remedy the whole situation by bulk changing the featured image with a plugin. or will you be offering a bulk editing of the episode image?

So happy to be using your plugin!

Hi there, yes when this update goes out the feed image (whether it’s the default feed or a Series feed) will be the image that’s associated with each episode, and if there is an episode-specific image for a given episode it will override that default image.

This will be going out in our next plugin update, so it will be in v2.6.2 – you can see what’s included in plugin updates in the changelog entry associated with each update.

Thanks! I’m really looking forward to it. This will solve some problems for me.

BTW, you may want to update the “tested up to” field for the plugin. Some people are a bit over cautious and expect that to always say the highest WP version.

Hi there, we just released v2.6.2 which brings that episode-specific image into your RSS feed. Please let us know how that’s looking for you after you’ve updated to the latest version, and if we can do anything else to help.

Thanks! I actually discovered the update right before I got your message.

I tested quickly putting a Facebook size rectangular image as the featured image, but in the rss feed it did not automatically pick the series image. When I put in an episode image then I got the image for that episode in the rss feed. Is that the behaviour you would expect? That if I have a featured image that is a rectangle, then I need to also include an episode specific image?

I think I cleared the cache, but I will have to test in more detail.

Yes, that sounds right. The episode specific image should be square and between 1400x1400px and 3000x3000px in size. for most themes the Featured Image is rectangular (like your FB image) and those will not be picked up in the RSS feed.

So from this (sorry should have quoted before)

Hi there, yes when this update goes out the feed image (whether it’s the default feed or a Series feed) will be the image that’s associated with each episode, and if there is an episode-specific image for a given episode it will override that default image.

I expected that if there was not episode-specific image it would revert to the series image regardless if there was a featured image or not.

Most podcasting mobile apps will fall back to the default image for the feed (default feed or Series) if there is not an episode-specific image. SSP (at this time) does not populate an entry in the feed for each episode that would be the default cover image if there is not an episode-specific image. We rely on podcast apps to fall back to the feed cover image.

So, in the eyes of podcasting apps, yes the default image will show if there is not an episode-specific image, but we don’t place that default image in the feed for each episode.

Ah, I guess that makes sense. I’ve just always put in the album cover as the featured image, so I thought that was required.

    Thanks!

    Hello!

So I just changed one of my episode featured images to be a rectangular image suitable for FaceBook. I did not add an episode image.

When I look at the rss feed, there is no image for that episode. That makes sense from what you shared above.

However, when I look at the list of podcast episodes on the backend/dashboard list (wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=podcast), it is showing the featured image in the image column. Is that what we would expect? Again, my hope is that I can have a featured image suitable for FB and not have that appear anywhere in the feed or with podcatching software.
