• So I have been on JustHost for the last 4-5 years. On my account I run several different wordpress websites. Everything was fine until last Friday, when suddenly all my websites on the account started to fail and go offline.

I have been in touch with Justhost customer service and they have been very unhelpful. They first claimed that they have been facing server issues and are working on it… then afterwards completely ignore this and say it is my plugins which are causing this problem. In response, I attempt to deactivate all my plugins but yet there is little to no change. I ask them again and they say I am running too much processes and I must better optimize my website, images, etc. After that they offer an optimization service package for $299.99 per website.

Ridiculous. Why would all of a sudden my websites (which I have not installed any new recent plugins or that sort) suddenly all become snail speed and go offline, only to feature error messages like “ERROR 504 – GATEWAY TIMEOUT” or “Error 503 Service Unavailable”. It seems incredibly odd.

Is Justhost really screwing me someway in this? Whenever I bring up that I think it is their server problem, not my websites, they ignore it and give me the same “I need to optimize my website” bs. I always update all my plugins, and I’m using Smush It for image optimization. This whole ordeal has frustrated me greatly and now I’m thinking of switching to a different host and seeing if my websites will continue to function there.

Any ideas or tips regarding this? Please chime in, especially if you had something related like this happen to you.

Edit: Forgot to mention, my cpanel is also running slow as well. Again, was not the case before Friday (Jan 27).

  • From what you describe above, this does sound like a server/hosting issue. You might be better off looking for another hosting company.

JustHost is a hosting brand of a company named Endurance International Group, also known as EIG. Other EIG hosting brands include Bluehost, Hostgator, FastDomain, Hostmonster, Arvixe, and about 40 others. EIG does not have a good reputation, and that’s being kind. Do a search on EIG and get set to be amazed at the level of disgust for the company.

Having said this, it’s not possible to provide specific assistance because you didn’t state what type of hosting you have at JustHost. For example, shared hosting plans can have difficulty with a single WordPress site if a “heavy” theme is used. (These days most themes seem to be written with no regard for server performance — all that matters is cramming as many features as possible into the theme, and using bloated “frameworks” to minimize the development time. But I digress.)

Issues like you’re having can being caused by too many MySQL queries, or themes/plugins that are excessively using WP-CRON, admin-ajax.php, or the REST API. (The latter is unfortunately becoming commonplace.) But these are typically symptoms; the root cause may be your site being targeted by spambots or other malicious visitors. You might want to check your Apache logs for signs of malicious visitors, and if that seems to be a problem, you can get rid of them with directives in your .htaccess file.
