• I’m looking to set up a website that just me and my office can use so that I can work from home. Is this what localhost is? Also, can I set up a database on this kind of site – or on any wordpress site? Need to be able to sort through photos, with info attached to the photos.

    Thanks for your help!

    Maggie

  • Hey Maggie whats up, localhost is the name of your own computer that’s used in any MAMP, WAMP, XAMPP enviroment, that means you can install an Apache Server which is in a few words PHP with MySQL database that can be used to install WordPress or to do anything PHP related.

I think that to do what you want to do you will have to set a server and install the database there and then give each computer access to the server and a username/password. I’m no expert however I really think that if you need an exclusive website for you and your co-workers there’s no need to do that, you can make an online website and make it unavailable for people outside your office via robots.txt and password.

Like I said, I’m not an expert and I hope it helps. Sorry for my english by the way

    Hi Maggie,

If all you’re wanting to do is search through photos with info on them, have you considered registering an account on something like Flickr?

I work for a large organisation and we have a Flickr account that contains thousands of photos, grouped into albums and ‘sets’. We can search them, upload new ones, delete them, etc.

Only people with the username and password can get in and access them, and best of all, Flickr give you loads of storage space for free so to date, it hasn’t cost us a penny.

Appreciate it may not be a perfect solution, but I hope it helps.
