 * is it possible to just use these themes as a bases for a “news website” with 
   no comments? I realize you can uncheck the comments box but then the “no comments”
   link still shows up under each post and how do I get rid of the catagories link
   at the bottom of each post too?

 * Yes it is. You need to edit index.php (usually) and maybe page.php / single.php/
   archives.php to remove the area of the code that shows the comments / cats.
    
   If you can tell us the theme you are using, we can give specific advice 🙂
