    @ashbridge

    Is it illegal to remove the footer links of the theme author and use the theme for a business?

    Thank you.

    First find out which license the theme is released under.

    It is released under license: GNU General Public License, version 3 (GPLv3).

    Then you can modify any section of the theme to any extent.

    Are you joking?

    I can claim it as my own? Put my own copyright on? Everything?

    Yes, see this re: GPL license:

    Though ethical is another question – it’s not good form to claim someone else’s work as your own no matter what the license or legalities. Putting your copyright in the footer of your site is fine. But what many people do is then leave the theme author info/credit in the header of the CSS file.

    Look at section 5 of that license http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html

    When you say put your copyright on, do you just mean write it on the webpage? Not actually copyright it?

    I would say familiarise yourself with the terms of the GPL and you will see what is ethical and what isnt. For example you cannot take a copy of work licensed under the GPL by another author and then release it under a closed source license. You too must release it under the GPL. You must also credit previous authors, PROMINENTLY !
