As for performance, Matomo provides a lot of features, more than any other WordPress analytics plugin, so it’s expected it will require more resources to run. That said, there are other ways to use Matomo other than using the Matomo for WordPress plugin. You can self-host a Matomo in a separate server to your WordPress (see https://matomo.org/matomo-on-premise/) or use our managed service, Matomo Cloud (see https://matomo.org/matomo-cloud/).
