Support » Themes and Templates » Is child theme needed if changes are within normal options in the theme

I am new to wp and wonder:
I am thinking of buying an Avada theme and use the option of entering your own color codes as the theme offers as a feature when customizing the theme (as I understand it ). Is it then neccesary to make a child theme to be sure not to loose the changes after a theme update?

By ofering this possiblilty to change color freely within the theme, I get confused about, if I am changing the style.css in a way that requires a child theme.

If yes, can I just make the changes in the childtheme as I would do in the parent theme (normal menu) or do I need to make a seperate style.css folder

    Thank you in advance 🙂

  • If you are doing customization through theme options then you are not required to create a child theme for color settings. But make sure before upating theme to take theme options backup in case you lost the options.

If you want to make any modification that are not available through options and want to change directly into files, in that case you have to create a child theme. Options are normally stored in database and theme update doesn’t effect options database record.

Thank you, what a speedy reply 🙂

I hoped it was like this. Then it is worth buying a complex theme I think.
Making a back-up with akeeba would do it, would’t it?

if you don’t change any code like on functions or style.css you will be ok. the changes on the theme function usually are saved on your data base so any update don’t affect those changes.
