Is a service like sitelock necessary for a wordpress.org site? (3 posts)

I've just recently started a wordpress.org site for a local dentist office I work for. We signed up for hosting through bluehost & sitelock was automatically added to the site. Since then, sitelock has been telling us that we need to pay for a higher plan & add wordpress hardening to our site even though all of the plugins in their wordpress hardening we already have on the site.

Thus far sitelock has been more of a complication for our site rather than being helpful. The two staff members from sitelock that I've spoken with were on the rude side and very vague with their answers to my questions.

Like I stated before, the site is for a small dental office. My main concern is that patients will have the ability to fill out their patient paperwork on our site & I want it to be protected.

Is sitelock worth it? Should I upgrade out account or should I cancel? I'm just curious as to if it's worth it or not, because thus far they've been more difficult than anything else. Opinions, feedback? Can anyone recommend anything to ensure our sites security?

Sitelock doesn't do anything that I'm aware of that you can't do yourself

Take some basic steps to keep your site secure - there are many tutorials online that will guide you through what you can do - a google search for wordpress security should yield plenty of reading, I've seen several tutorials go through my RSS reader lately

Ensure that you keep backups of your database and your files.

    Keep everything up to date.

Yes I recently gave a talk in which I pointed a number of things you can do to better harden your environment: http://perezbox.com/2012/06/wordcamp-orange-county-2012-wordpress-security-presentation/

Another good resource is this forum, think you'll find a number of people willing to give you a hand.
