• Fresh install, WP is in a subfolder.

After activating multisite with subdomains, the root domain site ( site.com in oppose to sub1.site.com ) returns 404s but not always. Nothing specific causes the error. It happens just like that out of nowhere and sometimes shift + F5 solves it.

Any ideas? Is it a known issue?

  • Not something I would call a “known issue”. Could be a 500 error, and the 500 error page is missing – hence the 404 error.

I recommend you look into your error logs.

What does the 404 look like?

    Errrrr… I can’t reproduce it now 🙁

Maybe I should be happy it’s gone but I have a hard time accepting the fact that there was an error which I have no idea what caused it.

I am 100% sure it wasn’t a connectivity issue, as the error occurred ONLY in the main site.

The 404 was a blank page with some text. Nothing WordPressy. Should have print screen it.

Hopefully I will get it again and upload the info. Yeah.. I just wished for an error..

    That’s not a 404 then 🙂 That’s a White Screen of Death, and yes, they’re different!

    Check your php error logs

So what can it be then?

Unless the error log file should be somewhere else then in the root folder when in multisite configuration, I don’t have an error log. It’s a fresh install.

The error log is a server thing, not WP. Ask your host or check their knowledge base first.

The white screen of death is caused by PHP errors, generally from themes or plugins.

Got it. That explains the error_log file that suddenly appears after I did something stupid when coding something. So this guy isn’t there. Still should contact the host? Though I’m afraid I will get about ten copy-pasted answers before someone will actually take a look (GoDaddy).

Assuming I have done nothing wrong (I really think I haven’t), is it possible that I have got those php errors on the main site only, and that after a period of time they were completely gone, and everything is OK now? I mean, technically is it possible to getting errors from a perfectly stable install and config?

And on the same manner, should I completely reinstall WP and set up everything from scratch?

Yes… I have some issues with technological uncertainty 🙁

I tagged this for GoDaddy just in case.

Open up the error_log and you’ll see a bunch of stuff like ‘Script headers…” and what not. Try to find the errors from the same time and day :/

I mean, technically is it possible to getting errors from a perfectly stable install and config?

Totally. All it takes is ONE change (theme, plugin, core WP, server…) to cause it :/

That’s the thing, there is no error_log. Later, it was created because of a theme thing issue. Nothing serious, I checked.

I might do a fresh install because of some other things I want to check out so I will open a better eye this time.

About tagging… cool. I didn’t really know what’s the point of tagging things. Does this mean some people search for pages by tags? 🙂

I’m such a noob damn it.

Oh yes, many of us search by tags 🙂 I keep a perma-watch on the ones that interest me most (like my plugins 😉 )
